Plan to pray in your room. The nearest mosque listed is the Albanian Islamic Cultural Centre in Visp, about an hour away by train.
Qibla
From Zermatt the qibla is roughly south-east. Pack a travel mat and use a compass app; mountains do not affect the direction.
Prayer times in February
Dhuhr is around 12:45. Maghrib moves from about 17:45 in early February to about 18:10 by the end of the month; the sun disappears behind the peaks earlier.
On the mountain
There are no prayer rooms at the lift stations. Pray before you go up, or find a quiet corner and keep wudu simple: water in the high stations is very cold.
Good to know
Fondue contains wine
Classic cheese fondue is made with white wine and sometimes kirsch. Raclette, melted cheese scraped onto potatoes, is usually made without alcohol; ask to be sure.
Watch the meat
Air-dried meat, sausages and bacon (Speck) are on many plates; most meat is not halal. Choose fish, cheese or vegetarian dishes.
Self-catering helps
An apartment with a kitchen lets you cook halal meat brought in, or simple meals with local cheese, bread, eggs and vegetables. The village has Coop and Migros supermarkets and a Spar Express.
Ramadan in the snow
Fasts are about 12½ hours. Ask your hotel for a suhoor tray and a late dinner; cold and altitude make it wise to keep mountain days short.
Alcohol
Served in restaurants and mountain huts. Hot chocolate, tea and fresh juices are everywhere.
Halal status can change. Confirm with each restaurant before you order, and pack a few staples from home if you are self-catering.
