Mosques & Muslim traveller notes
Halal food finder
Trabzon is a conservative, devout city: mosques are close at hand, local restaurants serve halal meat as standard and many family places serve no alcohol.
Mosques worth a visit
Fatih, about 4 km west of the centre
Hagia Sophia Mosque
A 13th-century church of the Empire of Trebizond, used as a mosque again since 2013. Its frescoes are shown outside prayer times; the separate bell tower dates from 1427.

Prayer & practicalities
Prayer times
Use the Diyanet prayer-time app, or ask your hotel. In October, Dhuhr falls a little after midday.
On the road
Every village has a mosque with wudu facilities, and petrol stations on main roads often have a mescit. Ask your driver to stop.
Visiting a mosque
Shoes off at the door; women cover their hair, and everyone covers shoulders and knees. At Hagia Sophia, visit outside prayer times.
Good to know
Halal as standard
Local restaurants, köfte houses and pide bakeries use halal meat as a matter of course.
Alcohol
Some hotels and seafront restaurants serve alcohol. Traditional lokantas and köfte houses usually do not; ask if it matters.
Mad honey warning
Rhododendron honey sold in the highlands, often called deli bal, can make people seriously ill. Buy ordinary flower honey instead.
Ramadan is not this month
October 2026 has normal daytime hours for restaurants and cafés.
